Your children can be infected with trichuriasis if they swallow soil contaminated with whipworm eggs. After hatching the eggs inside the body, the worm sticks onto the inside wall of the large intestine. Occasionally outbreaks of trichuriasis may be traced to contaminated vegetables which may be due to soil contamination.
