You have a part of the immune system that can detect something foreign like germs passing through and respond by enlarging your lymph nodes. This enlargement is called lymphadenopathy or swollen glands. Usually it is localised but when two or more lymph node groups are involved it is called generalised lymphadenopathy. HIV is a cause of persistent generalised lymphadenopathy(PGL).
