Often the lump vanishes when you lie down or push it and reappears when you stand, cough or sneeze (this is a reducible hernia). When you cough or strain, the hernia will usually, but not always, reappear. A reducible hernia is usually painless. You may notice a slight discomfort and feeling of heaviness or aching.
