Taking anti-inflammatory drugs that you can buy over-the-counter e. g ibuprofen can help reduce the pain and swelling in your finger. Your doctor may inject a drug called a steroid into the inflamed area of your tendon. This will reduce the inflammation so your symptoms should improve. You may see an improvement a few days after the injection but it can take up to a few weeks. The site of the injection may feel tender afterwards. If one injection does not help you may be given a second injection. If there is still no improvement you may need a small operation to treat your trigger finger. Steroid injections reduce the symptoms of trigger finger and stop the pain in most cases. However, they are less successful in people who have diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
