Abortions are commonly performed and usually safe. They MUST be performed by a trained person, preferably always at the nearest health facility. However, you need to be aware of the possible side-effects and the risk of complications of this procedure. Side-effects are the unwanted, but mostly temporary effects you may get after the procedure. You will have some pain in your abdomen and some vaginal bleeding. After a medical abortion, this may last for about 2 weeks. Occasionally, the bleeding and brownish vaginal discharge may continue for up to a month. If you have continued vaginal bleeding and feel tired, you may have anaemia. See your doctor if you have these symptoms.
