SLE is often difficult to diagnose as the symptoms can be similar to other conditions and may come and go. Therefore, further tests may be needed to see which of your organs have been affected. These may include an X-ray, an ultrasound scan, which uses high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the inside of your body, a CT scan, which uses X-rays to build up 3-dimensional pictures of the inside of your body, or an MRI scan, which uses magnets and radio waves to produce 2- and 3-dimensional pictures of the inside of your body.
