No-one knows why the fibroblasts start to multiply like this, but several factors are associated with Dupuytren's contracture. Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking have been linked with it. Diabetes makes you more likely to develop Dupuytren's contracture, but usually a milder form of it. Epilepsy, too, but no-one knows why. Manual labour may be a factor.
