A partial list of common HIV-related opportunistic infections includes: bacterial germs causing tuberculosis, pneumonia and blood poisoning. Protozoal germs e. g. toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis and others are sometimes seen. Many fungal OIs such as thrush frequently occur. Another group of germs cause viral diseases e. g. cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex and herpes zoster.
