You can lower the risk of getting diverticular disease by increasing the amount of fibre you eat, particularly from fruit and vegetables. Eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day as this will help form stools that are bulky but soft. Increase the amount of fibre in your diet gradually to reduce the risk of wind and bloating. Be sure to drink enough fluids to help prevent constipation. There's good evidence to show that vigorous exercise, eg jogging, running, cycling, swimming and rowing, help reduce the risk of getting diverticular disease. Try to avoid medicines that make you constipated, eg opiate-containing painkillers.
