Several HIV-related OIs e. g. tuberculosis, bacterial pneumonia, malaria, septicaemia and others can be prevented using drugs. This is called drug prophylaxis. One drug called co-trimoxazole(also called septrin, bactrim) is effective at preventing a number of opportunistic infections and has been shown to significantly reduce mortality among HIV-positive people starting antiretroviral therapy.
