In HIV associated wasting syndrome is caused by: low food intake(low appetite, AIDS drugs taken with an empty stomach and drug side effects e. g. nausea), poor nutrient absorption(several infections and parasites can interfere with this process and HIV directly affects the intestines reducing nutrient absorption), diarrhoea causing calorie and nutrient loss, changes in body breakdown of food caused by HIV disease.
