Antibiotic candidiasis can result from overuse or over-prescription of antibiotics e. g. oxytetracycline often used for the control of acne. The apparent effect of the antibiotic is to reduce the natural bacterial flora in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in a good environment for the growth of existing candida in the absence of any major competition.
