Although the exact cause of Dupuytren's contracture isn't known, a little is known about how it happens. It occurs when cells called fibroblasts, which create some of the tissues that help hold your body together, start to replicate more than usual. This causes too much collagen, a fibrous tissue, to be made. This causes a nodule to form which develops into the cord.
