You can be diagnosed with chronic viral hepatitis when evidence suggests an ongoing or relapsing viral liver disease for more than 6mths. Anyone with hepatitis B or C viral infection is at risk of chronic form. It also occurs in hepatitis D which is co-infected with hepatitis B. It is extremely rare in hepatitis A and does not occur in hepatitis E. Newborns are a very high risk group.
