There is a rare genetic condition called Isolated vitamin E deficiency or Ataxia with vitamin E deficiency, caused by changes in the gene for the production of proteins for vitamin E transfer (tocopherol transfer protein). Individuals with this condition have an extremely poor capacity to absorb vitamin E and develop neurological complications that are reversible by high doses of vitamin E.
