To lower the risk of an abdominal hernia, try to stop problems that make it more likely. Eg, if you are:coughing or sneezing-find out the cause and get help to treat it; straining on the toilet-drink lots of fluids and eat more fibre; overweight-get help to lose weight; pregnant-wear a support belt to support your abdominal muscles; lifting heavy objects-find ways to reduce heavy lifting.
