Various fungal germs cause piedra. White piedra is caused by fungi in the Trichosporon group, while black piedra is typically caused by the fungi Piedra hortae and Trichosporon ovoides. Piedra hortae is very common and has been found in the hairs of animals incl primates and in stagnant water, soil and vegetables.
