Anything that raises pressure in the abdomen can increase the risk of an abdominal hernia, incl coughing, sneezing, straining on the toilet(eg, if you have constipation), pregnancy, lifting heavy objects(eg, weight training), being overweight. The risk of an abdominal hernia also increases with age because the abdominal wall muscles become weaker as you get older.
