You may find out that you have Barrett's oesophagus when having tests for something else. Your doctor will ask about your symptoms, examine you and may also ask you about your medical history. You may be referred to a hospital for a test called a gastroscopy(or endoscopy). It allows the doctor/nurse to look inside your oesophagus and stomach using a narrow, flexible, tube-like telescope called an endoscope. Sometimes, they may also take a small sample of tissue(a biopsy) from the lining of the oesophagus to be sent to a laboratory to see if the cells are normal. You may also be referred to a gastroenterologist-a doctor specialising in diseases affecting the digestive system.
