In chronic hookworm infections, the number of parasites can become great enough to cause serious anemia(low red blood cell count). This results from blood loss due to the worms attaching themselves to the intestines and sucking the blood. If this happens and is combined with poor nutrition, pregnancy or serious disease(eg sickle cell disease or malaria), it may become very severe. In children it can stunt growth.
