The exact cause of rectal prolapse isn't clear. However, it is known to be related to certain conditions that put extra pressure on your abdomen (tummy) e. g constipation, diarrhea, an enlarged prostate, disorders that cause persistent coughing, e. g cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or whooping cough. It is also related to neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, lumbar disc disease, lower back or pelvic injury and spinal tumors. Mucosal prolapse is often related to long-standing piles (haemorrhoids).
