Newborns can get HIV from a positive mother's body fluids during delivery/breastfeeding. PMTCT is Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission. It's a program that gives mother and baby drugs during pregnancy and after birth to prevent HIV passing to the baby. If a trained health worker who knows your status is there at the birth they can reduce the risk of the baby getting infected during delivery. Because breast milk contains HIV, infected mothers must get advice about how to safely feed the baby. PREGNANT MOTHERS-know your status to protect your baby! POSITIVE MOTHERS-protect your child from HIV by getting medical advice before you get pregnant/as soon as you know you are expecting!
