Fibroids are growths in the womb (uterus). They are not cancerous. They may be caused by high levels of oestrogen (a hormone). They can be any size from as small as a pea to as big as a melon.1 in 20 women get fibroids at some time in their life, mostly aged 30-40.Many women with fibroids have no symptoms but some get heavy bleeding, stomach pain, pain during sex or infertility. Because fibroids are not usually dangerous women often only need to get them treated if they have symptoms. Treatment is medicine/surgery by a doctor.
