MOTHERS WITH AIDS-TALK TO A HEALTH WORKER TO DECIDE THE SAFEST WAY TO FEED YOUR BABY. Breastfeeding when you have AIDS is possible but not recommended. Most mothers with AIDS do not have enough milk for the baby and may be quite sick themselves. This is a problem because breastfeeding by a mother with AIDS is only safe if the baby is ONLY fed her breast milk and no other food. This is because other food, even powder milk, can cause tiny scratches in the child's digestive system which can let the HIV virus from the mother's breast milk into its body. It is best for mothers with AIDS to give their children special powder milk with NO breastfeeding.
