First degree burns are painful burns on the first layer of the skin. To treat them, run cool water over the area of the burn or soak the burn in cool (not ice) water for at least 5 minutes to help reduce swelling. The skin over the burn may peel off after 1 or 2 days and heal in 3 to 6 days. Don't apply any oil or creams to the burn, cover the burn with a sterile bandage or clean cloth. Some pain killers may be used to help relieve the pain.
