Diabetes in pregnancy - Introduction

Diabetes is a disease whereby the body's natural mechanism of handling food is compromised leading to a high sugar level. During pregnancy, the body is subjected to hormonal changes which can put a strain on its ability to regulate sugar. In certain individuals, this effect is overwhelming and they develop features of high blood sugar levels. This may have an impact on the pregnancy and the growing baby.
