Febrile convulsions - Diagnosis

Before a diagnosis of febrile convulsions is made, the health care provider may perform tests to rule out other causes of convulsions. If an infection such as meningitis is suspected, a health care provider may take a spinal tap to check for signs of the infection in the cerebral spinal fluid. The health care provider may also test blood and urine samples to pinpoint the cause of the child's fever. Children with febrile convulsions usually do not require inpatient treatment. However, if the convulsion is prolonged, is as a result of a serious infection, or if the source of the infection cannot be determined, a health care provider may recommend for the child be hospitalized for observation.
