Diarrhoea in children - Rehydration fluids

The health care provider will initially focus treatment on correcting and preventing dehydration. Treatment of dehydration includes administration of fluids through the vein or orally depending on the level of dehydration. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) are the recommended fluids if your child is able to drink without vomiting. If dehydration is severe, your child may be required to stay in the hospital until dehydration is corrected and until they are able to feed without vomiting. If dehydration is not severe and your child is able to drink without vomiting, the health care provider may give you directions on how to use ORS at home. Remember to go back to the hospital if you think your child is not getting better. It's very important that your child continues to feed as soon as dehydration is corrected. Fluids such as soups, yogurt and gruel can be given in addition to the ORS. Avoid soft drinks such as soda and concentrated juices which will only make dehydration worse.
