Choking - Introduction

Choking is when the throat or the windpipe are blocked by a foreign object such as food. The windpipe can either be partially or completely blocked allowing little or no air to get to the lungs. A chocking episode is not only frightening to the child, but also to the caregiver. Because choking can be life threatening, it is important that all caregivers have some basic information on how to take care of a child during a choking episode.
