Complementary feeding - Food hygiene

Your baby's food is clean and safe if it contains no germs that cause diseases such as diarrhoea, vomiting, worms, typhoid, cholera or hepatitis; if it does not contain pesticides and harmful chemicals and if it is not likely to choke or burn your child. You can keep your baby's food clean and safe by washing hands with soap and water before preparing food, washing your hands and those of your baby with soap and water before feeding and by ensuring the utensils you use are clean. Always use fresh food that looks and smells good and keep perishable food in a refrigerator if you have one. Cover cooked food and eat it within 2 hours if there is no refrigerator. If kept longer, reheat food thoroughly so that its all boiling hot to kill all germs. Use only boiled or treated water. Keep pesticides and other dangerous chemicals, and the equipment and containers used for them, away from the house and water supply.
