Assisted delivery - Introduction

This is when the natural powers of pushing your baby are augmented by use of an instrument. Either a pair of forceps or vacuum device is used to aid delivery of the baby.
This decision will usually be made by a health care provider in consultation with a mother in labour. It is important to remember that a decision to assist delivery is complex and that the choice between this and a caesarean is not straightforward.
