Diabetes complications - Baby
During pregnancy the babies of diabetic mothers are constantly exposed to high sugars. This makes the baby produce a hormone called insulin in order to reduce the sugars. The other effect of this hormone is the increased growth of organs in the baby. It therefore causes an acceleration of growth leading to a larger than normal baby. Such babies are at risk of distress while still in the womb and may be delivered earlier than others. After birth, they may suffer from breathing problems and also low sugar levels.
