Drowning - Introduction

Water is part of a child's development. Water means fun, adventure and play. It can, however, be hazardous. Even a few centimetres of water at the bottom of a bucket, in a bathtub, basin or water puddle are enough to drown a small baby. Drowning occurs when one is unable to breathe normally as a result of submersion/immersion in liquid. Surviving a drowning event involving loss of consciousness or water inhalation is called a near drowning event. Both drowning and near drowning can have life threatening consequences. Therefore, care must be taken to prevent children from drowning.
