Fever - Recording temperature

There are several methods of measuring a child's temperature using a thermometer. Temperature can be measured from different parts of a child's body such as the rectum, the armpit, the mouth, the forehead and the ears. In all children, a rectal temperature is the most accurate while temperatures measured in the ear or on the forehead are less accurate. Measuring the temperature from the mouth is only recommended if the child is above four years of age and can hold the thermometer well under his or her tongue. Different types of thermometers are used to measure temperature from different parts of the body. Ask your health care provider to show you the correct way of measuring a child's temperature using your thermometer.
