Complementary feeding - When to start

Breast milk provides your baby with all the necessary nutrients up to the age of six months and remains an important food to your baby up to the age of two years. Therefore, additional feeds are only necessary from the sixth month on. However, if after the fourth month your baby is not gaining weight adequately despite adequate breastfeeding or your child breastfeeds frequently and appears hungry soon after, your health care provider may advice you to commence additional feeds even before the age of six months.
