Choking - Coughing child

1. Check first if it is safe to approach the choking child. Take care not to put yourself in danger.
2. Check if the child is conscious or not. If the child is unconscious follow the instructions for an unconscious baby. If the child is conscious, proceed to the next step.
3. Is the child's cough effective, weak or absent? Check if the baby is able to cough. If the child is unable to cough or has a weak cough, they may become unconscious if the foreign body is not removed.
4. If the child has a good cough, stay with the child encourage them to cough until the foreign body dislodges.
5. If the child has a weak cough or suddenly becomes unable to cough you need to give them back blows. See our section on how to give blows.
