Complementary feeding - Feeding tips

Children, whether well or not, need to be encouraged to eat. Children, especially those below two years, should always be supervised during mealtimes. Always put your baby's food in a separate plate so that you are able to assess exactly how much your baby takes. Children tend to get distracted easily and may want to play as they eat. Be patient and encourage your child as necessary. If they stop eating, wait a little and then offer more. Young children often want to feed themselves; encourage this but be ready to help to make sure that most of the food eventually gets into the mouth. Feed your child as soon as they begin to get hungry. If children wait too long to eat and get upset, they may lose their appetite. Do not force your child to eat or feed when sleepy. Make sure the child is not thirsty, but do not give so much liquid before or during a meal as this will fill up the stomach and reduce appetite.
