Complementary feeding - Breastfeeding

Breast milk is the only food your baby needs during the first six months of their life. After that it continues to be an important part of your baby's diet even in the second year of their life. By the third year, your child will easily get enough nutrients from food and the risk of illness and malnutrition will be less. Stopping breastfeeding abruptly can upset a child emotionally, so it is best to stop gradually. Your child may still want to breastfeed occasionally, for example if tired, upset or sick.
