Neonatal sepsis - Diagnosis

A number of tests can be used to diagnose neonatal sepsis. Blood samples and samples of cerebral spinal fluids may be obtained to determine whether bacteria are present and to check for markers of infection. If your baby has an infected cord, a swab may be obtained and sent to the laboratory to check for presence of germs. Other tests include a urine test to look for presence of any germs. The results may take 2-5 days to come back and your baby may be started on treatment in the meantime.
