Complementary feeding - Sick child

When children get sick, they may lose appetite and eat less. They may also eat less due to vomiting, sores in the mouth or because they just do not feel hungry. Giving food to your sick baby will not harm them in any way. On the other hand, failing to feed or giving inadequate food to your sick child can lead to malnutrition. During sickness, your child needs extra food and drink. Increase the number of breastfeeds, offer small amounts of food frequently and encourage your child to eat. Try giving them their favorite food. If your child has sores in the mouth, give soft foods. If your child has diarrhoea or fever, give plenty of fluids such as soups. If your child is sick, take them to the nearest health facility for assessment and further management.
