Diarrhoea in children - Signs of dehydration

The most severe threat posed by diarrhoea is dehydration. This happens when the body loses lots of fluids through diarrhoea and vomiting making the normal body fluid levels dip below normal. Signs of dehydration include excessive thirst, restlessness, irritability, decreased skin elasticity, dry lips and mouth and sunken eye balls. As the child continues to lose more fluids, dehydration gets worse and the symptoms become more severe. The child begins to lose consciousness and pass little and concentrated urine and sometimes no urine at all. Their hands may feel cool and moist and they may appear pale. If your child is unable to eat or retain feeds, they need urgent medical care to prevent dehydration.
